How Much Does It Cost to Build an AI App in 2026?
There is no single price for an AI app. The cost depends on what the AI has to do, what data it needs and how reliable it must be. Here is how to estimate it without surprises.
The short answer
For planning, think in tiers rather than one number. These are rough, illustrative ranges for the market in general, not a quote, and real projects vary widely with scope, team location and compliance needs.
- A single AI feature in an existing app (summaries, smart search, a Q&A assistant): the lowest tier, often weeks of work, in the low five figures in USD.
- An AI-powered MVP with a few core workflows, authentication and a clean interface: typically a mid five-figure to low six-figure budget.
- A full AI product or platform with custom retrieval, agents, integrations, admin tooling and compliance: six figures and up.
If a quote is far outside these bands, ask what is being included or excluded. The gap is almost always scope, not hourly rate.
What actually drives the cost
- Type of AI. Calling a hosted language model API is much cheaper than training a custom model. Most business apps should start with the former.
- Data readiness. If your documents and records are messy, scattered or locked in PDFs, cleaning and structuring them can take as long as building the app.
- Integrations. Each connection to a CRM, ERP, payment system or legacy database adds design, build and testing time.
- Accuracy requirements. An assistant that can be occasionally wrong is cheap. A system that must be right, such as finance or healthcare, needs evaluation, review workflows and often more engineering.
- Platforms. Web only, iOS and Android, or all three. Cross-platform frameworks reduce but do not remove the cost.
- Security and compliance. Access control, audit logs, data residency and certifications all add work.
The cost people forget: running it
Building is one-off. Running is ongoing. Plan for model usage (billed per token or per request), hosting, vector database fees, monitoring, and time to tune prompts and retrieval as real users arrive. Usage-based AI costs grow with adoption, so it pays to design caching and model routing early.
How to keep the budget under control
- Prove the hard part first. Prototype the riskiest AI behaviour on real data before funding the full build.
- Start narrow. One user type and one core workflow beats a platform nobody asked for.
- Use existing models. Prompting plus retrieval solves most problems without fine-tuning.
- Measure quality. An evaluation set turns “it feels better” into numbers, which prevents expensive rework.
- Phase the roadmap. Release a thin version, learn from usage, then invest further.
Questions to ask any AI development company
- What is included in the estimate, and what is not?
- How will accuracy be measured before launch?
- Who owns the code, prompts and data?
- What will monthly running costs look like at our expected usage?
- Can we change model providers later?
